Women's Resources

Following are resources that can provide more information on a variety of women's issues. These resources are listed for informational purposes only, and inclusion in this site does not connote endorsement by the Florida Commission on the Status of Women.

The Florida Department of Health Women’s Health Program
In 2004, Florida passed legislation establishing the Department of Health Officer of Women's Health Strategy with the charge to direct public policy to address the distinct health needs of women across the life span. The Women’s Health Program has adopted a new overarching theme of health literacy, which is defined as “the ability to understand and act appropriately on health information.” The theme of health literacy will be used to strengthen collaborative relationships within the Department of Health, external partners, including other state agencies. One such state entity is the Florida State Library System within the Department of State (DOS).

Although the glass ceiling is still intact, it’s definitely showing some cracks! And with each crack, women are gaining a stronger foothold in territories that historically have been dominated by men. While there is no doubt that women can survive and even thrive at the top, there are some who become ensnared by it over time and their struggle to break free leaves them feeling exhausted, unproductive, and hopeless.  Is this you? Are you one of these bright, ambitious, and highly driven women feeling unappreciated, stressed, and burned out? If so, you've come to the right place!

Ten at the Top in Tampa Bay
This website highlights a documentary film that celebrates an unprecedented time in the city of Tampa/Hillsborough County area---where 10 extraordinary women headed governmental institutions, in positions traditionally held by men. The women who agreed to be filmed tell of the paths they traveled, the risks they took, the decisions they made, and who helped them along the way as they climbed their respective ladders of success. A cornerstone to the film is that it serves as a mentoring tool for young girls who may not realize that they too can reach such high echelons of public service.

The Florida Commission on Human Relations
The Florida Commission on Human Relations serves as a resource in addressing and resolving discrimination issues which impact each and every one of us.
