Laying the Foundation for the Future of Women in Florida
 by Commissioner Carrie Estevez Lee

It was a distinct honor and personal pleasure to have the opportunity of spending a few hours with a truly historic figure in Florida Women’s history, Mrs. Aleene Kidd MacKenzie, the first chair of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women.

The Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women was established by executive order in 1964 by Governor Farris Bryant and later reappointed by Governor Hayden Burns. This commission was comprised of 27 women leaders in women’s clubs, civic organizations and in the professional sector. The Commission’s objective is to explore the economic, social political and legal areas affecting women within the state of Florida. They were charged to study and report on the status of women in the state in 1964. The report was submitted to Governor Burns on October 1, 1965 after a year and a half of research and study.

New Years Resolution
by Commissioner Marie Flore Lindor-Latortue, Public Outreach Committee Chair

Blanca and Flore 2006 has been a very productive year for the Commission, and the public outreach committee. The newsletter, website, and general outreach on behalf of the Commission have been very successful, and we thank you for your continuous suggestions and support. If you haven’t visited our website lately, I encourage you to visit www.fcsw.net. Be sure to visit often, as it is always being updated with the latest Commission news and information.

In 2007 we are committed to enhance the public outreach mission by being more involved with the media locally and at the state level. We want to take the opportunity to thank Mr. Carl Fombrum from Carl’s Show on Island TV Haitian TV station in Miami, FL for inviting Commissioner Blanca Bichara and myself to appear on the show on January 31, 2007 and share information about the Commission, it's projects, and the Florida Women's Hall of Fame.

Again, Happy New Year! Make a resolution to learn how to better manage your money or even start and manage your own business. We hope that you will attend one of our educational seminars held throughout the state, with Lake Worth, Gainesville, and Ft. Myers dates already on the calendar. Southern Women in Public Service Conference Coming to Tampa!

The Southern Women in Public Service: Coming Together to Make a Difference conference began in 1991 as an effort to promote women in government leadership in the South. This conference is unique because it brings together women leaders from both political parties, all levels and branches of government, along with women leaders in business and academia. They are united behind the idea that women are making a difference in the quality and character of government and that more women need to be involved as leaders in American politics.

Carrie Meek, the first African American elected to Congress from Florida since Reconstruction and member of the Florida Women's Hall of Fame, will receive the Lindy Boggs Award at the conference on May 20-21, 2007 in Tampa, Florida. Judy Genshaft, president of the University of South Florida, will open the conference and Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio will welcome participants. Invited speakers include newly elected CFO of Florida, Alex Sink, and three members of Congress: Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Kathy Castor (D-FL) and Virginia Foxx (R-NC).
