Just as the
summer
Florida heat
has set in,
the work of
the FCSW has
reached full
steam! On
June 25,
2007, I had
the
privilege of
addressing
the members
of the
Jacksonville
Mayor's
Commission
on the
Status of
Women.
The Mayor's
Commission's
purpose is
to develop a
public
consciousness
of the
talents of
women,
regardless
of race,
color or
creed, as
equal
partners in
the private,
business and
civic
community;
to encourage
women to
become
actively
involved in
matters
pertaining
to the
community;
to work
toward
utilization
of capable
women in
roles of
leadership;
and to serve
as a source
of
information
for women on
legal and
human
rights,
economic
equality,
health, and
discrimination.

Charitable
Chicks in
the
Community
(C3)
by
Commissioner
Claudia
Kirk
Barto
Lesley Shriberg,
of the Community
Relations Unit
with the Palm
Beach County
Sheriff's Office
read an article
in the newspaper
about a group of
friends who got
together each
month for lunch
or dinner and
made a donation
to a charity of
someone's
choice. She
thought that she
knew some women
who would be
interested
and could afford
to make a
minimum donation
of $25 to a
different
charity/organization
each month. She
also thought it
was a fun way to
have lunch with
friends, network
and gossip - all
of which we
do with great
finesse!
It is really
simple to
organize.
Each month
there is a
different
Chair that
chooses a
charity,
excluding
religious or
political
organizations. We
have a very
diversified
group with
several
religions
represented
and varying
political
opinions but
it works
because we
have fun and
we are
giving back,
even if in
small doses,
what we have
all been
fortunate to
earn,
inherit or
win!
Our members
are from the
fields of
law,
politics,
law
enforcement,
business,
non-profits,
real estate
and
journalism.
We are
fortunate to
have new
friends join
us each
month and
C3
has grown
from 6 to 25
members in
little over
six months.
I hope this
inspires
other women
to do the
same in
their
communities.
