The Commission partnered with the Hillsborough Commission on the Status of Women and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa to conduct an osteoporosis screening event available to conference attendees as part of the National Association of Commission’s for Women Healthy Bones Initiative. Many of the attendees participated in the bone density screening as a step toward an informed and healthy lifestyle.

The Secretary of the Florida Dept. of Health and Florida’s first Surgeon General, Ana M. Viamonte Ros, M.D., MPH, emphasized the importance of “The Three P’s for Women’s Health”, which are prevention, preparedness and personal responsibility. Jean Kline, RN, BSN, MPH, shared the major accomplishments in Florida’s women’s health which include the completion of the Women’s Health Data Report 2006, convening Florida’s first Governor’s Conference on Women’s Health, and conducting the Survey of Florida’s Women’s Health Programs, a survey which was spearheaded by the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. Tamara Yang Demko, Esq., led the assembly in an ice breaker exercise covering basic healthy habits including :

o Do you eat Breakfast?
o Do you sleep seven hours?
o Do you exercise?
o Do you take time for yourself?

The Commission wants to encourage women to follow Secretary Viamonte Ros’s three P’s for physically active and healthy lifestyles so as to lead more energetic and productive lives. The Commission would also like to acknowledge the leadership of Commissioner Mona Jain, M.D., Ph.D. in her initiative to empower women though supporting women’s health efforts in Florida.
