Commission
Celebrates
Women's
Equality Day
by
Ladine
Slvatore,
FCSW
Intern
Being the
women we are
today, could
you imagine
existing in
a society
where your v oting
opinion is
not counted
for? The
women's
suffrage
issues began
change when
a group of
brave women
decided to
stand up for
their rights
and the
rights of
other women.
In 1848 women
such as
Elizabeth
Stanton,
Lucretia Mott,
Susan B.
Anthony, and
Charlotte
Woodward made a
special
appearance at
the Seneca Falls
Convention to
give the women
of this country
a voice to be
heard. These
women wrote
lectures,
marched and
lobbied to
achieve what
many stated to
be a radical
change in our
constitution.
Shortly after
their pivotal
meeting in
Seneca Falls,
organizations
where formed
such as; The
American Women
Suffrage
Association and
The National
Women's Suffrage
Association,
which later
merged together
to form the
National
American Women
Suffrage
Association.
These
association
encouraged women
to be active
leaders in other
movements and
organizations.

Powerstories
Theater
Empowers
Women
by
Jancie
Nepon-Sixt
Powerstories
Theatre of
Tampa Bay,
Inc. is a
women's
theatre
company that
shares
inspiring
personal
stories with
audiences,
as well as
teaching
workshops to
women and
girls. Our
mission is
staging true
stories of
women and
girls to
open minds
and hearts.
At its core,
Powerstories
is about
empowering
women.
Working for
Powerstories
Theatre, I see
over and over
that
storytelling is
vital to
EVERYONE. Our
stories help
connect us to
each other, give
shape and
meaning to our
life's
experiences and
empower us in
many ways.
No one knows
this better than
Powerstories
founder and
director, Fran
Taylor Powers.
In an amazing
"practice what
you preach"
risk-taking
example, she
left her
influential
position as an
agency director
to begin this
non-profit
women's theatre
devoted to
cultivating
women's voices
from within
using their own
true-life,
powerful
stories.
Powerstories
Theatre
celebrated its
five year
anniversary in
2005 with a
moving selection
of stories by
successful women
who had all
faced challenges
on their path of
self-discovery.
The evening
culminated in an
"everyone on
their feet",
joyous sing
along with Irene
Cara performing,
"What a
Feeling!" "take
your passion and
make it happen,"
that is just
what Fran did
when she created
Powerstories.
And because of
her vision, many
other women are
inspired to do
the same.

A Day in the
Life of an
FCSW Intern
by Lindsey
Interlandi,
FCSW Intern
I never imagined
I would have a
great experience
with my first
internship.
Sure, most would
be excited for a
new opportunity.
After a year of
the same
internship
however, many
would not say
the same. I work
for the FCSW
staff, who are
responsible for
all "behind the
scenes action."

News
From
the
Sarasota
Commission
by Gini Hyman, Chair, SCSW
The
Commission
on the
Status
of
Women-Sarasota
County
(SCSW)
has
reformed
as an
independent
CSW.
The
Advisory
Commission
on the
Status
of
Women,
renamed
SOWS,
voted to
dissolve
itself
in 2005
due to
the
stringent
limitations
placed
on it by
a new
Resolution
of the
Board of
County
Commissioners.
Several
of the
former
Commission
members
continued
to work
on
women's
issues
with
other
organizations
at the
community
and
state
level.
We met
informally
and
supported
each
other's
efforts.
However,
there
was no
single
group to
give
advice
on
public
policy
and
propose
viable
solutions
from a
woman's
perspective
to our
governmental
entities.
At the MCSW
Women's
Equity Day
celebration
in August,
we decided
to act.
Within a
week, we met
and filed
our
non-profit
corporation
papers and
received our
Certificate
of
Incorporation.
Our purpose
is to
Empower
women
through
Education,
Research and
Advocacy.
(ERA)
We look
forward to
working with
the FCSW and
networking
with the
other local
commissions
on projects
that will
enhance the
status of
women in
Florida.
